About

The Viper is a traditional English Pub nestled in the woods in the heart of Mill Green, Ingatestone, Essex. Real Ales and excellent home made food.

Delightfully unpretentious with local ales, simple pub food and no modern intrusions. Popular with a wide mix of customers; cyclists, walkers with their dogs and families, this is an unspoilt local tucked away in the woods. The cosy and unchanging rooms have spindleback and armed country kitchen chairs and tapestried wall seats around neat little old tables, and a log fire. Famous for its local ales - Nethergate Viper VIPA and Mighty Oak Jake the Snake (both brewed for the pub) and Oscar Wilde, and a couple of quickly changing guests from brewers such as Crouch Vale and Mr Grundys on handpump and Westons Scrumpy and Perry. Live bands play during the very popular Easter and August beer festivals and morris men sometimes dance outside. Homemade simple lunchtime food includes the Viper Jumbo, chicken curry with mango chutney, chilli con carne, meaty or vegetarian lasagne, sausage and mash with onion gravy and puddings such as apple crumble with custard and chocolate pudding, plus roast dinners on a Sunday. The tasty bread comes from the local baker just a mile away and the meat is from a local butcher. Food: Monday - Friday 12-2 Saturday & Sunday 12-3 Tables on the lawn overlook a beautifully tended cottage garden - a dazzling mass of colour in summer, further enhanced at the front by overflowing hanging baskets and window boxes.
