About

A 17th Century Inn and Restaurant

This colourful historic and intimate Inn with 10 en suite bedrooms, parts of which date back to the 1300's, is situated close to what was known as the Lion Gate, one of the original entrances to the old walled town of Hay-on-Wye. It is privately owned and personally managed by renowned hostess Dolan Leighton. The Old Black Lion is a short walk from the centre of Hay on Wye exudes ancient charm and atmosphere, always warm, cosy and welcoming with its old beams and panelling. It is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold. The Old Black Lion is justifiably renowned for its luscious food which is prepared and cooked fresh by Chef Max Evilio and his team using the best seasonal and local ingredients that can be sourced. Eating at The Black Lion is one thing that has to be done when visiting Hay. Hay-on-Wye is an international destination for bibliophiles, with over thirty bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books. There are also many boutique shops and the popular markets are held every Thursday offering something for everyone.
