About

You can drink your batty ales, You can drink them by the flagon, But the only brew for the brave and true; Comes from the Green Dragon

No-one really knows why the Green Dragon is so named but it is believed to have emanated from a Welsh knight, home from the crusades, who could have been colour blind or lost or both. There has been a building on this site since the 12th century. Unlike most pubs opposite churches, it has never been owned by the Church but by the Lords of the Manor who leased it out to innkeepers, many of whom had two trades such as cordwainer (shoemaker) blacksmith or gardener. The earliest recorded landlord was one William Lidstone in 1607 whose occupation was then known as a "Licensed Tippler". The present "Tipplers" are Peter & Alix Crowther. The Crowther's have been Tipplers of The Green Dragon since 1993. The pub is very traditional with a stone floor, a large and splendid fireplace, wooden beams, a tunnel somewhere underneath the floor which went down to the nearby beach and, some say, a ghost. But time and history have left the old building unscathed by drama or scandal. This pub is very much a village pub run by a very "quirky family" as quoted by the best kept village compition. The bar is under the "professional" guidance of Crowther who keeps a good cellar and is usually serving up to four traditional real ales. The kitchen is under the care of his wife Alix who's menu is full of traditional pub food using as much local produce as possible. In the good pub guide 2014 the pub is voted as worth a visit and described as a 'Popular and friendly village pub with yachtsman landlord, well worn-in interior with beams and flagstones, boat pictures, sleepy dogs and cats, snug with sofas and armchairs, grandfather clock and open fire, well kept Otter ales, Addlestone's and Aspall's ciders, good choice of wines by the glass, bargain food; tables out on partly covered terrace, lovely garden, handy for coast path and beach.'
